How to Talk to your Legislature
A quick guide for you
.) Always knock on the door before you enter the office. The reason is you don't want to interrupt a meeting, there could be another constituent talking with their legislator.
.) Walk in to ask if it is a good time to talk or if you could schedule a meeting.
.) Take this opportunity to sign the logbook. It is important to sign the logbook so you can FOIA it to prove that you came into the office.
.) If it is a good time to talk to your legislator bring the bullet point plan addressing 3 issues, your ask about the issue and possible solution.
.) Ask for a constituent service request form and attach the three issues to the form.
.) If the meeting goes well ask for a picture with the staff or Representative.
.) That picture is also proof that you came in that specific date and talked with your legislator.
.) If the meeting does not go well move on to the next legislator.
.) Repeat the same method until you find a legislator that is willing to listen and take action on your issue.
.) You might only find one legislator per issue.
.) After you leave your legislator, find the committee chairs over each individual issue and submit the same constituent service request. The committee chair will help you pass your issue down to everyone on that committee that agrees with your stance.
.) Ask your chairs if they know any legislator that will take up your issue and follow their advice.
.) If your issue is not individually handled by your legislator request your legislator to draft a bill.
